COVID-19: Bringing Out the Good in People
My good news for you today comes from China and New England.
Thank goodness for Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and his negotiation skills. Just in time for the challenge to get 1,700,000 masks from China to Americans who desperately need them to stay alive!
Jonathan Kraft provided the New England Patriots’ team plane. The Kraft family donated $2,000,000 to cover half of the cost. Kraft later said he never saw so much red tape.
The plane is a 767, a passenger plane – no experience with cargo, except the human kind. It would require retooling for International flight and cargo.
Then, they needed visas.
This crew is amazing! While the plane was being retooled for the longer flight in Wilmington, Ohio, they rushed to the closest pharmacy to get visa photos.
Next, the race was on for Alaska and then on to get and deliver the precious cargo.
The crew could only stay on the ground for 3 hours in China to avoid being quarantined.
Many thanks to the Chinese crew getting help from Tencent (the Chinese Tech Company) who made it possible to collect, count and inspect the masks.
The plane landed on Wednesday morning where it was inspected and work began to verify the masks. I’m happy to report that all 1.2 million masks (that’s all the plane could take on this trip) ended up making this dream come true!
Please send me your experiences both good and bad, especially how you’re dealing with the current situation.
Dr. Harvey Feinberg, chair of the National Academy of Sciences’ Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats, told the Whitehouse that the coronavirus could be spread by breathing and conversing in addition to sneezing or coughing. He said that immediately he will be wearing a mask when he goes to the grocery store, adding, “I’m not going to wear a surgical mask, because clinicians need those, but I have a nice western-style bandana I might wear. Or I have a balaclava. I have some pretty nice options.”
Rich and I are getting a friend to make us some cotton masks so that if we were to be infected we can’t spread this demon. Remember this won’t stop you from getting the virus, but it could save many other lives … who knows, maybe even a loved one.
